Vulkan Eifel & Bitburger Brewery

Today we had two stops on our agenda............the Vulkan Eifel and the Bitburger Brewery.  On the way to visit the Bitburger Brewery in Bitburg, we stopped off in the Vulkan Eifel, which is a region in the Eifel Mountains in Germany, defined by it volcanic geological history.  In the Vulkan Eifel, we saw several crater lakes, surrounded by the beautiful rolling hills and farms in the German countryside.  The ride to this area took about one hour, and was quite scenic. On the rolling hills were many grazing cows, horses, sheep and many old farm houses.  The ride was very enjoyable as was the area of the volcanic lakes.  By 12:45 PM, we reached Bitburg, which is the home of the Bitburger Brewery.  We had scheduled a 1:00 PM tour, which began promptly.  The tour was in German, but with Peter's help, I was able to grasp the basics of what was explained to us.  The tour was very interesting in itself, but the highlight was at the end, when we were brought into this very large room, with a very modern circular bar and two bar tenders serving the "needs" of the guests.  I started off with a very fresh, smooth Pilsner bier.  After that, the bar tender wanted me to try all of the varieties of bier that Bitburger brews, from a cola beer, to a lemon type beer, one with grenadine and on and on.  They were all quite delicious and very distinct from each other.  Large pretzels were also served.  After about 45 minutes of engaging in several biers, Peter and I were on our way home.  It was about 1 1/2 hour drive, again through the scenic Eifel area of Germany.  Once we arrived home we had just a short time to relax, since we were meeting one of my former Exchange students at the Brauhaus in Rheinbach at 5 PM.  Sure enough, at 5:00 PM, Jonas was there to meet us and we headed into the brauhaus for a drink.  Jonas had only an hour to spend with us, since he had other things to tend to, but Peter and I had a wonderful Schnitzel dinner with our biers.  We all chatted a bit, Jonas and I talked about his time at Rhinebeck High School, and after dinner we were on our way home.  It was to be an early night today, since we had to do a bit or packing and organizing, since tomorrow we are leaving Peter's place and headed north to visit two of his sons, in Düsseldorf and Detmold.

  1. Oh, I know someone at the theater of Detmold, because she was in St. Gallen before!!
It seems like you took the Oktoberfest with you. Everywhere you go, you drink beer and just have a good time with happy people although you don't understand them if they speak German:)
