Today is somewhat of a sad day, since I will be leaving my
friend Peter, with whom I have had such a great time with over the past 8
days. Peter and I had a tremendous
week together and he really showed me a lot of great scenic and historical
areas of Germany, as well as a visit to a brewery. My time with Peter was definitely one of the highlights of
my trip. We were leaving Detmold today and Peter was going to visit a friend in
Wesel, Germany. Wesel, being close
to the border with the Netherlands, is where Peter would drop me off to get the high speed ICE train to Amsterdam. We left
Bjorn’s house by 9 AM and we were off, headed toward Wesel. We passed many towns whose names I was
very familiar with, since I was in this part of Germany in 1970. We arrived in Wesel a bit early for me
to take my train, so Peter and I had lunch and our last bier together. My train arrived on schedule in the mid
afternoon, and I was off to Amsterdam.
The train ride was uneventful and arrived in Amsterdam about 5:30
PM. I have been to Amsterdam five
times before this trip, so I am somewhat familiar with the city. Knowing where I was going, I walked to
the hotel from the central station and arrived there within 20 minutes. After getting settled in my room, I
took off to see the city. I walked
to many parts of the city, including the Red Light District, which never ceases
to amaze me.After browsing around for a while I headed back to the hotel and stopped in a bar and had a nice fresh Grolsch beer before heading to bed.
